The traditional Kundan setting
You may have seen it on Pinterest, but Kundan gold jewellery was invented in India during the 16th century. Kundan is a style of setting in which very thin pieces of gold are used to frame the stones – rather than prongs – giving the stone simple, uninterrupted prominence. It’s ideal for setting irregular stones, like Polki diamonds, in a secure manner. This video from the V&A shows an Indian jeweller building up the Kundan setting. Antique Kundan earrings carried many types of stones, although they are frequently associated with Polki stones nowadays.
Antique Kundan earrings
The Mughal era was, oddly enough, the source of many jewellery designs that remain popular today. Indian jewellery blazed a path of colour and decadence that has never really gone out of fashion. If you’re looking for genuine antique Kundan earrings, it may please you to know that our contemporary Kundan earrings are crafted in much the same way, and with the same materials, as the originals. In 22ct gold they’re luxurious and important: heirlooms of the future, whose story begins with you.
